Rangers 5, Alpena 3

Marquette – The Marquette Rangers junior hockey team cashed in on three power play goals Friday night at Lakeview Arena, beating the Alpena IceDiggers 5 -3.

With the win, the Rangers kept pace with first place Traverse City in the North American Hockey League North Division race. Traverse City pounded Motor City 7 – 1 last night at home to remain six points ahead of Marquette in the standings.

The Rangers struck first when Hancock native Tanner Kero scored eight minutes into the opening period with an assist given to forward Scott Henegar. The lead was short lived as Alpena scored twice in under 50 seconds to take a brief 2 – 1 lead midway through the first, before Henegar equalized it at 11:59 from Collin Saint-Onge and Garrett Ladd.

The teams traded opportunities, as well as a few fisticuffs in the second, before Ladd gave the Rangers a 3 – 2 lead on a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle with 51 seconds remaining in the period Saint-Onge would make it 4 -2 at 5:10 of the third; scoring the Rangers third power play goal of the night with Henegar picking up the lone assist,

Alpena would make it 4 – 3 at 8:26, but then Kero scored his second of the night; receiving a pin-point pass from Marquette native Brad Chapman who threaded the needle between two Alpena defenders sending Kero in all alone on IceDigger goalie Marco Weiser for the final score.

Weiser made 35 saves on 40 shots, while his counterpart Kevin Kissaw for the Rangers made 33 saves on 36 Alpena shots on the night.

The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday evening at 7:30 PM.
